The Dignity Matters Project supports the El Semanario Weekly Issue in it's efforts in contributing to an accurate census result in Colorado and the Denver Metro Area. Our support will consist of sharing information and updates on the progress of their mission and give access to educational information about the census process and it's importance as well as volunteer opportunity information.
Note - Latinos should be aware that it is projected that as early as 2045 we will see an ethnic majority shift in America where Latinos and People of Color may become the majority population. That has created a significant fear factor for many people in America that gives incentive to census demographic information manipulation and voter suppression, i.e., during the 2019 national midterm elections, we saw repeated voter suppression efforts in the Southern states.
GEO Aurora Detention Facility is a for profit privately run facility that holds approximately 2,000 migrant women, children, and family members. As of August 2019, a man has died there of what was determined to be medical neglect.
What is the census and why is it important?
Information and updates that will be offered on this site regarding the census is educational in nature and critical to helping to promote awareness as to how the census works, why it is important, and the critical points of how it impacts the quality of life and well being of the elderly, families, and people of color as well as the critical importance census information brings to balanced government representation that reflects the true demographic makeup of our communities.
The U.S. Constitution requires a census every 10 years to count all residents in the United States, regardless of background. It's critical that we all participate in the 2020 Census. Fair political representation and access to resources for vital public services depend on it. The four key areas we should all understand are:
REAPPORTIONMENT
This reapportionment of seats in the House of Representatives and resulting change in electoral votes helps dictate the geographic shift in political power within the U.S. Without accurate demographic data we can't have balanced representation and miss the window of opportunity to adjust from one decade to the next. This contributes to results like the 2016 presidential election.
The number of congressional districts in a state may shift based on increases or decreases in population over the previous decade This is important because it affects congressional representation and state electoral votes.
Within states, the congressional and state legislature districts are redrawn based on Census data. Based on population distribution changes within states, the boundaries must shift every ten years in order to ensure each district has roughly the same population. In most states, including Minnesota, the state legislature draws the district lines. This can present issues with partisan influence, leading to unfair districts through gerrymandering which means manipulating the boundaries of an electoral district so it favors or harms a party or class of people.
This gerrymandering can happen in subtle and overt ways and is becoming an increasingly abused tactic used to legally tip the scales in favor of the agendas of corrupt politicians who are circumventing the fair system of representation for their own or party agendas. They are part of our broken system of government. The constitution is fine, it's the corruption of the GOP and Democrat politicians who have compromised to corporate greed and the money they receive OR they have proven to be incapable. Notwithstanding, they are not to blame as much as we are for allowing them to get away with this for years and years.
PLAYING THE GAME
Clicking on the image to the left will bring up tools and information that offer a detailed understanding of this critical issue. Watch the video then click on "Play the Game." Please educate yourselves
America has made it easy for corrupt politicians because we have not held them accountable for so many years that now we are struggling with it. They know this, they exploit this, and unfortunately, they know that overall, we have not yet figured out how to clean it up fast enough. It's important to understand that no matter what they say, they have compromised their offices and disrespect the trust we give them. Accordingly, they have now lost the faith of the people. Our answers are in knowledge and action, but we first have to understand the game.
REDISTRICTING
DEMOGRAPHIC DATA
The Census provides a snapshot of country, state, local areas, and on a broad level defines who we are as a nation. Demographic data helps groups from all parts of society use census information to decide where to direct their attention and resources. The census helps these groups identify areas in need of certain services, businesses, civil rights outreach, community engagement, etc.
For instance, a group advocating for ballots and voter information to be printed in languages other than English may use census data to locate populations likely to primarily speak a non-English language. Given the racial disparity in the history of American voting rights and the "ugly" that has caused those disparities, the demographic data provided by the Census is extremely important in protecting these rights and not allowing political agendas or racism to continue to relegate people of color to being reduced by them to second or third class citizens.

Accordingly, this underscores the probability that these types of acts will be made with the census and, therefore, how critical it is that we participate and monitor the process as well as hold our elected officials accountable for it's security.
The Dignity Matters coming initiative, the Billboard Project, will be conducted during August and September of 2019 to create awareness among Denver Latinos and in the Denver Metro area in an effort to increase access and accountability at the facility. The Dignity Matters Project affiliate, La Familia Ministries, is in the process of requesting access to visit migrants with faith based teams in order to pray with, and support migrants at the facility. La Familia is making preparations to take teams in for support visits and distribute Bibles and provisions allowed. This effort is being made on a humanitarian and compassion ministry basis and is not associated with any political platform, agenda, or organization.
Progress of these efforts as well as updates on known facility developments will be available here. We encourage calls to State and Federal representatives to insure that they monitor conditions and require accountability at the facility in a forthcoming, timely, and transparent manner. They are also accountable.
Community members and students 18 years and older are welcome to take the training to volunteer in this effort. To volunteer use the contact info on this site. GOVERNMENT RESOURCE ALLOCATION
Over $400 billion per year is allocated throughout the nation with help from census data, including programs such as public health, education and infrastructure. State and local funds are often distributed based on population, meaning that every person is important when advocating for funding. The strength of census statistics and data also helps inform many public policy proposals at all levels of government. Conversely, the successful efforts to corrupt and manipulate the process only serves to skew representation and harm many through misappropriation and unfair distribution of government resources. Among the many that are impacted are children, families, and the elderly.

DENVER -- Less than a month into her new job, Denver City Councilwoman Candi CdeBaca is already making waves. "It's crazy that informing the public is making waves," she said. At the center is a $3.89 million-dollar contract with a company known as Community Education Centers, Inc. to provide halfway houses to the city through its Division of Community Corrections.
"It's really a subsidiary of a corporation that we're hearing a lot about called GEO," explained CdeBaca. "The entity that is detaining immigrants in inhumane ways." GEO is the same company that runs the Aurora ICE facility. The same facility where political activists and Colorado's democratic congressional leaders have toured to demand change to 'for-profit' detention centers like GEO.
They said that there were 48 women housed in one dorm, which they said was about half the size of a gymnasium, inside the women’s unit. Several women told the Democrats it had taken between one and three weeks to get aspirin recently to treat aches and menstrual cramps. After learning of the contract, CdeBaca pulled it off the consent agenda and has called for a public debate Monday. "I was unaware Community Corrections was GEO," she said. "We don't typically pull out contracts for public comment and that's something that I've been requesting."
A public hearing on the contract will be held during city council's monthly meeting at 5:30 p.m. Monday. "I personally feel very uncomfortable awarding — rewarding — a company that is violating human rights," said CdeBaca.
“The GEO Group takes great pride in our 30 years of services provided to the Denver community, yet the Denver City Council’s politicization of these services is undermining the important work we provide to this vulnerable population," the company said in a statement to Denver7. “Like all Americans, we are concerned about the unprecedented humanitarian crisis at our nation’s Southern border. We can’t solve the immigration crisis from our facilities, and yet our care is being challenged and mischaracterized by political factors outside of our control."
Denver City Councilwoman makes a hard decision towards accountability with both GEO and the City of Denver.
